Afternoon Tea @ Balthazar

I’m British, from the South West and probably one of the few people left in the world who isn’t intolerant to wheat, gluten and/or dairy. The result of all of these facts? Afternoon teas are my thing.

After somewhat of a late night (/early morning) on Friday night, I’ve, through ALL fault of my own, come down with a one stinker of a cold this week. I got back to London on Monday evening after a weekend at home in Bath and I so wanted to give in and commit myself to a Tuesday in bed, listening to the thunder and lightening crash down outside and wallow in my own self-inflicted pity. I battled through though (trooper, I know, poor little blogger Emily!), and dragged my soggy self onto a bus and towards Covent Garden to refuel on an indulgent afternoon tea.

I’d walked past Balthazar loads of times and admired the grand, french-inspired brasserie from afar, but actually dining here had been on my foodie London bucket list for some time.

We were there to try out their limited edition Flowerbx Afternoon Tea (in collaboration with FLOWERBX) which brings together the skill of Balthazar’s Head Pastry Chef Régis Beauregard, with the floral expertise of FLOWERBX CEO Whitney Bromberg Hawkings.

To start, we had a glass of their Flower Fizz cocktail (a concoction of pink peppercorn gin, cocchi rose, pinky vodka and crushed violet petals) quickly followed by a selection of traditional, fresh and deliciously light finger sandwiches which included cucumber, mint and homemade hummus, smoked salmon and lemon crème fraîche and lobster prawn rolls.

Followed… buttermilk scones with Devonshire clotted cream & homemade strawberry preserve, along with floral sweet treats (oh my WORD). The FLOWERBX cakes were as good on the tastebuds as they are on the eyes –  all in the shape of colourful seasonal blooms, in Sky Blue Hydrangea, Violacious Tulips, Petal White Anemone, Sunburst Dahlia, and a deep red Balthazar Rose.

We enjoyed a few hours sipping hot tea, nibbling on bitesize goodies and listening to the rain crash down outside whilst catching up on both of our rather naughty weekends, and how glad I was that I pulled my sorry ass out of bed! Such a fun and delicious afternoon in one totally unforgettable setting 💕
